I wasn't really sure I would like this book, I didn't really think it was my theme. I was wrong, because I actually really enjoyed this book, I found it exciting, interesting and thrilling! I found the end left a lot of things in suspense, but I later found out that there are a few more books after this one, so that was okay. I would not rate it as the BEST book I've ever read, but I gave it pretty high rating even so, especially considering there is only one female main character, although I didn't mind as much for this book, I sort of felt like a boy when I read it so I didn't care if there were girls or not. I think a lot of boys 10+ will enjoy this a lot (BEWARE: It contains swear words), and maybe some girls too, it depends on their personality. Enjoy!
Thomas is in a metal elevator, lost and disorientated. He cannot remember any details of his previous life, only his name. The elevator takes him to the Glade, where other boys like him live, in the middle of a maze. Their life has been the same for the last two years: food arrives once a week, and a new boy arrives once a month. Always a boy. But a day after Thomas arrives, an alarm sounds, indicating a new arrival. To their surprise, its a girl. She brings a message that will change the rules of the game. The countdown has started.

I cried. A lot.
This book was BEAUTIFUL. It was really sad, but there was something in it that made me love it, even if I cried buckets when I was reading it (literally, buckets. I filled up 2 big ones with my tears : ) ). I loved the monster, and the way his stories just seemed to end the way you least expected them to. And then I loved the end... and the beginning... and the middle... and the whole book... It was just fantastic. And I think everyone 12+ should read this book, not just teenagers. but adults too. There are just no age limits on this book. I also think this is a very important book, possibly the most important I have ever reviewed on this blog, and possibly the most important book I have ever read. This book has a clear message, and it is beautiful. I really think every 12+ child and every adult should read this, even if they think they won't like it, because it is important to read and understand this book. And, you never know, it might end up as your favourite book. 12:07. When monsters come. Conor's been expecting the monster from his nightmare, the one with all the wind and screaming... But this monster is different, ancient, wild. It makes a deal with Conor. Four stories. Three of them, the monster will tell him. But the fourth is Conor's turn. And it must be the hardest story ever. It has to be the truth. When I borrowed this book from the library, it was a rather random pick. I really wanted a book to read and I thought it would give my blog some variety too. At first I thought this would be the typical girl story where you happen to break with your best friend for something silly or all that, but as I kept on reading I really started to enjoy it, and from Chapter 4 onwards I just could not put this book down. It had a really important meaning; you can't let the bully win. It just showed how broken someone can be after bullying, and all through the eyes of a girl who wants to help her friend and doesn't know how. And of course the characters (well, except Kit) were fabulous, and so different from each other too. And the end was fantastic! I think this is definitely a very cool and important book, and I went from being sceptical about Cathy Cassidy books to deciding to give some different books a go: including books I would have never thought of reading before! Altogether, this book is great for 10-12 year olds, because it would mostly interest girls this age and because it is not exactly qualified as long (it's approximately 190 pages long, which right now sound like a lot, but it is actually nothing when you hold the book in your hands and start reading). Another blurb from the book: Hannah and Joey have been best friends forever- just the two of them. But when Joey's new foster brother Paul turns up, everything changes. First Joey falls for Hannah's brother, Kit. Then Paul complicates things- with some kittens, a chocolate bar and a stripy pink bicycle. Hannah's world is turning upside down. Can you rescue a friendship when it's drowning? Can you save a friend in trouble- if they don't want to be saved? It says "How far would you sail to save a friend?", the picture is really blurry though :(
This was such a beautiful book, and yet so sad! Every time I read it , I cried even more. I could just feel what Jesse felt, and it just went right to my heart. I was left without words when I finished it... I still cannot write a decent review for this book, I loved it so much... I would recommend it to 11+, maybe 10+.
Jesse Aarons' greatest ambition is to be the fastest runner in his grade. He's been practicing all summer and can't wait to see his classmates' faces when he beats them all. But on the first day of school, new girl Leslie boldly crosses to the boys' side of the playground and outruns them. Jesse and Leslie are soon inseparable, playing together in the forest in a magical world named Terabithia... I am gradually falling in love with Point Horror, but for some reason I am reading all the best books before I read the good but not as good ones. I thought this book was great (except for all the kissing moments; they were kind of awkward), but the ending just had me confused. I won't give any spoilers, but if you understand the ending once you read it, please comment and explain it. Who was playing those pranks on Kate? And who did Kate love in the end? Those are the two questions I can remember, but I bet I have many more questions which I have forgotten for now. Anyway, if you enjoy Point Horror, you'll be glad to know I will almost certainly be reviewing more of those books.
Kate is a budding writer whom her teacher takes to a writing conference. She loves horror, but when terrifying stuff starts happening to her, Kate isn't sure she is enjoying herself... Especially when she finds out someone doesn't like her idea of being teacher's pet... Someone who is not afraid to kill... This book was pretty good too, but it wasn't as great as the first. I found the ending rather violent and disturbing (well, what did you expect! An "And they lived happily ever after"? This is a horror story, girl! "OH, SHUT UP!!!!") Sorry about that, my inner self gets really annoying sometimes. Anyway, I thought this book would be better than it actually was. I was kind of disappointed that the first book's plot was so good and the second book's plot was not as awesome. Plus, so far all the Point Horror books I've read did not include any M _ _ _ _ Rs (I wrote it like this for the people who don't like spoilers). I would probably give it a 3 1/2 rating, personally, but maybe someone else will read it and think it better than the 1st book.
Brenda is not very confortable with Halloween. After all, it was only 12 months ago when a murder was planned at her Halloween party... And very close to being accomplished. So this year, when her friends persuade her to play a Halloween revenge prank designed to terrify the victim to death, Brenda realises that Halloween will always terrify her... I was desperate to know the end throughout the whole book. I was hooked. It was just so twisted, and one second you though the culprit was, say, Terry, the next Jordan, and after that Mark. I was so surprised when I found out who it really was!!! However, I think the ending had much to be desired. I found it sort of lacking, you could say. It told you the end, but I kept on wondreing a lot of things after I finished. My mind wanted to know a few more details, like what happened to the culprit, what happened to the victims, what happened to the camp in general. But the plot was great. If you like mysteries and horror, then it's perfect for you!
Almost everyone at Camp Silverlake has a fear of something: creepy crawlies, snakes, swimming in the lake... But underneath all the jokes and happy faces, some of the councillors hide a much deeper fear... A fear that a secret they kept for seven years will be discovered- a secret they kept from when they were at the camp as kids. The summer one of the kids didn't make it home alive... Now someone wants vengeance. And they will not stop at any price... When I started school today, one of my friends came up to me with this and said, "Here. I got this for Christmas and thought you might like to read it" This happens between us sometimes, she gets a book as a present and as soon as she's finished it (or maybe even before she starts it) she lends it to me. I thought it really sweet that she lent me her Christmas present before she read it so that I could enjoy it too (obviously realising that I am rather short on books at the moment, since I haven't had access to the school library since before Christmas), and I thought it a great way to start reading this book, which I was sure promised to be interesting. And indeed it was, and it had me spellbound until the very last page. I found it incredible that anyone could come up with such new ideas for new stories, because so many have been written already that it gets harder and harder to invent different ones (I myself try to write a few stories, but the general idea has already been used :( ) The plot was so intriguing that I just had to keep reading, and before I even finished the book I knew I need to read the sequel soon. The characters, the plot, the world... The were fascinating and new, with small typical things, true, but very few of them. It was fantastic. I would probably recommend it to kids aged 12+, because the description is vivid and might cause nightmares (I'm not sure I, a girl of 11, will sleep truly peacefully tonight) and the language is rather complex for younger kids (and there are swear word included too- some kids don't really care, but personally I prefer to avoid that kind of language). My book included a few shots from the movie, and from what I could see the story is quite changed (including the powers of two girls- Emma and Olive) which seems rather disappointing, and you might get muddled up, so I'm not sure I would recommend both the movie and the book, but that's entirely up to you. You're probably thinking, why is an 11 year old girl reading this? Well, my family got this book for Xmas, and it was a really funny book, with a very important moral. I found it interestingly matched my brother's and my personality. I am Blue Cat, and my brother can be identified as Red Cat. My brother loves me, and vice versa, but we are always fighting and we are always jealous of each other's things and qualities, just like Red Cat and Blue Cat. So that's probably why this was a present for the whole family. I think this is a great book, not just for younger kids but for older kids too, because it's very important to be happy with what you have, and not always wanting someone else' things.
Red Cat wants to be as smart as Blue Cat. Blue Cat want's to be as fast and bouncy as Red Cat. But what colour equals happiness in the end? (It's very important that you look at ALL the pictures, otherwise you might miss some really funny and important bits) Quick update, folks: I broke my writing arm a few days ago, so there might be more posts this month, as I can't draw or such but I can still read so I guess that's what l'll be doing most of, but there might be less blog posts, because it's harder to type now my arm is in a cast :( , so I might only post once or twice, or I might post a lot more than I usually do.
Anyway, moving on to this book: it was absolutely fantastic! The plot had so many twists and turns, and the end was sooo annoying (only because it left me desperate to read the second book; I'll have to get hold of it somehow). I found it really funny too, especially because Apollo is so terrible at being human... I love Greek mythology, and this book was so exciting and interesting... I would definitely recommend this book for adventure/greek mythology fantasy lovers! How do you punish a god? By making him human. As a punishment for the god Apollo, Zeus turns him into a human. Lost in the human world without his godly powers, he has to find a way to be admitted into the Olympus again. But some people don't wan't him to succeed, and Apollo can think of only one place to go: Camp Half-Blood, a camp for modern demigods. |
